Who are Ninjas?
Ninja swords are known as Ninjato in Japanese. Also called ninjaken or shinobigatana, it is shorter than the swords used by the samurai. Samurai swords such as the katana and tachi are made from high carbon steel. They are crafted by accomplished swordsmiths, and since they are custom made for each warrior. So, the process of producing a single sword can take months. Samurai swords are of very high quality and extremely sharp.
On the other hand, ninja swords have straight blades and were made with less care. Unlike samurai swords that were passed down from generation to generation, ninjato were of inferior quality. The ninja class was not a respected one in Japan. They were an underground society, and most of them were outlaws and mountain people; thus, they could not afford to acquire the services of expert swordsmiths like the samurai were able to.
Ninjato swordsmiths also did not have access to superior quality materials and resources. However a number of ninja swords manufactures are trying to provide amazing ninja swords for fans.
Purposes of Ninja Swords:
Ninja swords have a very different purpose than samurai swords. Japanese Samurai swords are for slicing and cutting, while ninjato are more of stabbing and thrusting weapons. The straight blade are most effective when use in a sawing motion. Though it is shorter and of poorer quality, the ninjato have more uses than samurai swords. By pitching the blade into the ground, the ninja could use the tsuba (hand guard) as an impromptu step in order to scale a wall.
A ninjato could be used as a hammer as well, by holding onto the blade (which was not very sharp) and hitting with the tsuka (hilt). The saya (scabbard) was 3 to 4 inches longer than the sword. And this extra space allow for a hidden compartment that could store small weapons such as daggers, shuriken, poisons, or blinding powders. A longer saya also disguised the ninjato as a common sword, and in turn concealed the fact that a ninja was one. In addition, the tip of the saya was normally detachable so, it could be used as a snorkel, allowing a ninja to hide underwater.
Ninja swords Techniques:
The ninja were very skilled guerilla fighters who used every weapon at their disposal. They also love the element of surprise, and a short sword definitely works in their favor as it is easier. And is more suitable for indoor fighting. Some swords come with stands, making them perfect for displays, while others have sheaths with carrying straps or include extra companion weapons for that authentic ninja feel.
